Docklands Insights
History, numbers and the daily work behind a changing waterfront
From working port to mixed district
Originally a working-class area comprised mainly of dockhands and port workers, the Dublin Docklands have flourished into a thriving tech and financial hub in the city. Much of the old culture of the docks remains too - seen both in the architecture of the area as well as in the people who inhabit it. This has led to the Dublin Docklands becoming one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in Dublin.
A snapshot of life here
A 2025 Dublin City Council Docklands Forum report describes approximately 27,000 residents, 44,000 workers and more than 300,000 annual visitors in the Docklands. The community and atmosphere of the docks is incredibly dynamic, so make sure to keep up to date with all of the changes to the area at Silicon Docks.
Keeping the water’s edge working
Huge amounts of work go into maintaining the waterways around the Dublin Docklands. The Canals and Liffey are constantly being cleaned and repaired. Much of this work is unseen despite it’s importance in the running of the docks. At Silicon Docks, we intend to shed new light on this work as well as keep you up to date with work being done in the area. For current notices, consult Waterways Ireland and Dublin City Council before a visit.
Homes and the rental market
The Docklands includes apartments in converted industrial areas and newer waterfront buildings such as Capital Dock. There is no single useful “average rent” for every home here: asking prices change with size, address and availability. Compare current Dublin 2 listings and the Daft Rental Report before quoting a figure. Premium waterfront listings can sit well above the broader market.
Culture in the open air
Grand Canal Square can become an informal stage - dance gatherings, including salsa, add energy outside the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre when organisers bring them to the square. Events like these are what give the Dublin Docklands its reputation as one of the best places to live in Dublin. Make sure to follow along with Silicon Docks so that you don’t miss out ont he next big event.
